Elizabeth Clark was born in 1875, and rose by her own efforts to become a much loved storyteller and author. Her pioneering determination meant she was able to create for herself a life in storytelling, often to large gatherings. For decades her collections of stories sold in large numbers in the UK and overseas. Her beautiful prose and ability to tell a story in carefully unfolding steps, makes them perfect for young children. Many of her books were illustrated by the brilliant Nina Brisley.
Nina Brisley (1898-1978) had few equals as a children's illustrator. She studied at Hastings and Lambeth schools of art. Her charming style and beautiful pallette made her one of Britain's most successful illustrators. She worked on most of Elizabeth Clark's stories, and is also famous for her illustrations of Elinor M Brent-Dyer's 'Chalet School' series. Her sister Joyce wrote the Milly Molly Mandy books, which are still in print.
